Not a Gym Person? 10 Easy Ways to Move More Every Day
If the thought of the gym makes you want to pull the covers back over your head, I have good news: you don't need it to be active.
Some of the biggest benefits come from simply moving more throughout your day. Walking, gardening, playing with your kids, taking the stairs. It all counts, and it adds up.
Why everyday movement matters
Regular movement supports your heart, blood sugar, mood, sleep, digestion and joints. It also helps your body handle stress. And sitting for long stretches, even if you exercise later, can work against all of that.
In New Zealand, the Ministry of Health recommends adults do at least 2.5 hours of moderate activity a week, like brisk walking, plus muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days, and to sit less overall. That might sound like a lot, but broken up it's just over 20 minutes a day.
10 easy ways to move more every day
Walk after meals. Even 10 minutes after lunch or dinner can help with digestion and blood sugar.
Take calls on the move. Walk around the house or the block during phone calls.
Set a movement reminder. Get up and move for 2 to 3 minutes every hour you're sitting.
Park further away or get off the bus a stop early.
Choose the stairs whenever you can.
Make it social. Swap coffee catch-ups for a walk along the beach or through the park.
Do squats while the kettle boils or calf raises while you brush your teeth.
Get outside on the weekend. Auckland has so many beautiful walks, from coastal tracks to the Waitākere Ranges.
Dance it out. Put on your favourite song while you cook or clean.
Stretch before bed. A few minutes on the floor helps you unwind and sleep better.
Make it a habit
The easiest way to make movement stick is to attach it to something you already do. For example: morning coffee → step outside for 5 minutes of sunlight, or lunch break → a 10-minute walk. Start with one or two and build from there.
The bottom line
An active lifestyle isn't about punishing workouts. It's about weaving movement into your everyday life in ways you enjoy. Every bit counts.
